The City’s first goal with this project was to have a facility to clean and house their downtown street sweepers in close proximity to their routes. Their second goal was to do this in an environmentally sensitive manner. The program consists of a bioretention area, vehicle wash bay, enclosed heated parking area, office, break room, and restrooms. An existing site and building were utilized. Site work included removal of paving and replacement with a grass swale, landscaping and a bioretention area to collect the site's rainwater. The existing building’s steel structure was adapted and reused. The wash bay included a sand/oil separator to pre-treat waste water sent to the sewer treatment plant. Solar panels were incorporated to offset energy usage. Photovoltaic panels will provide most of the power needed for the facility, while solar water panels will generate heat for the vehicle storage area. A number of passive techniques were also included, such as natural ventilation and shading devices. This building came online June 11, 2009 and will be monitored closely over the first year to determine the annual saving to the client.
