Program Provide a park centered on appreciating and understanding the Carolina Bay and Pocosin environments found on the site. Design ResponseThe park plan was carefully developed by Kimley Horn and Associates, and locates vehicle parking, playgrounds, park shelters and the community near the park entrance, preserving most of the 57-acre park for trails and passive activity. Native plants and wildlife are preserved, and visitors are encouraged to explore the park by following the paved walking trails that reveal unique coastal environments. Our firm, and our consultants, provided all architectural and engineering services for the community building and park shelters. The building designs use wood roof structures, masonry walls, natural stone and wood floors. The buildings fit into the park, and are open to natural light, views of the park, and outdoor terrace space. The wood columns supporting much of the roof are detailed and built of timber milled from old-growth logs salvaged from the Cape Fear River. The park has become one of the City's most popular.Honors & Recognition Lower Cape Fear Stewardship Development Coalition, 2006 Development Awards, Outstanding Stewardship |
