ProgramWorking with the existing facility, provide learning environments equal to those found in new schools. Design ResponseConstructed in phases, beginning in 1912, Winter Park Elementary School is the oldest facility in the district, and has historical significance to both the district and the surrounding neighborhood. The design respects and highlights the existing structure, while improving its comfort and utility. Layers of poorly performing finish materials were removed and, where possible, the original high-quality materials were refinished and left exposed. Accessability improvements were made throughout the building. The building received thermal insulation, insulating double-glazed windows, and a central mechanical system, with the equipment housed in an addition that respects the style of the original structure. The mechanical system is enclosed in the thermal envelope, and is routed through the existing attic to minimize its visual impact. Additions provide air conditioned connections between what were separate structures. The electrical and communications systems were completely replaced, and plumbing was replaced as needed. A fire sprinkler system was added throughout the facility. Honors & Recognition Wilmington Downtown Inc., 2011 Restoration Leadership Award
